Do I Need a Panel Upgrade for a Level 2 EV Charger?

When a panel upgrade is actually needed for EV charging — and when it isn't.

Short answer

Not always. A proper load calculation determines if your existing service supports the additional charger load. Many 200A homes are fine; older 100A homes often need an upgrade.

Start with a load calculation

NEC requires a load calculation before adding a major continuous load. We perform this before quoting any EV install.

When an upgrade is needed

Repeated breaker trips. Old 100A service. Federal Pacific / Zinsco / Challenger panels. Multiple EVs planned. Solar or battery storage planned.

FAQ

Will I know in advance?

Yes. We confirm before the install date and quote the upgrade separately if needed.
