Do I Need a Licensed Electrician to Install an EV Charger?

Texas requires licensed electrical work for Level 2 EV chargers. Here's why DIY or handyman installs are risky and how a proper install protects you.

Short answer

Yes. In Texas, installing a hardwired Level 2 EV charger requires a licensed electrical contractor (TECL) and a permit. A proper install includes a load calculation, a dedicated circuit, code-compliant overcurrent protection, and an inspection.

What Texas law requires

Texas requires electrical work to be performed by, or under the supervision of, a TDLR-licensed electrical contractor. Hardwired Level 2 EV chargers are permanent additions to the electrical system and fall squarely under that rule.

Risks of an unlicensed install

  • Undersized conductors that overheat under continuous EV load
  • Missing or wrong overcurrent protection
  • No load calculation — overloads the existing service
  • No permit — voids insurance and complicates resale
  • Manufacturer warranty voided

What a proper EV install includes

  • Load calculation against NEC 220
  • Dedicated 240V circuit sized for continuous load
  • Correct breaker and conductor sizing for the charger's max amperage
  • City permit and inspection
  • Manufacturer-correct termination and torque

FAQ

What about a plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Even a 'simple' 14-50 outlet on a 50A circuit is a permitted electrical installation in Austin and should be done by a licensed electrician with a load calculation.

Can my handyman do it?

Not legally for hardwired installs in Texas. And practically, an EV charger pulls continuous load for hours — undersized or loose work overheats.

Does Civitas Electrical install all brands?

Yes — Tesla Wall Connector, Ford Charge Station Pro, Rivian, ChargePoint, Wallbox, Emporia, and most major Level 2 chargers.
